The purpose
Why Vimarsh exists
Uttarakhand's hill villages are often left out of both government outreach and mainstream NGO attention — access is genuinely harder here than in the plains. Vimarsh has stayed in the same blocks of Nainital district for 25 years, which means the trust it has with women's groups, panchayat representatives and schools isn't new; it's accumulated.

Vimarsh is a community-based organisation working in Nainital district, Uttarakhand, now in its 25th year. We work directly with women, adolescents and children — through village-level groups, counselling and legal aid, school-based health and rights education, and support for children's education.

Our approach
How we work
Every Vimarsh programme is built around a village-level group — of women, of adolescent girls, of adolescent boys — that meets regularly, is trained, and takes on its own leadership over time. Paralegal volunteers, women leaders and youth organisers from these communities are trained to carry the work forward themselves
A group forms
A women's or adolescent group forms at village level and begins meeting regularly.
Capacity is built
Members are trained as leaders, paralegal volunteers, or peer educators from within the community.
The community leads
The group takes on its own leadership, coordinating directly with panchayats, schools and government departments.

An elderly couple with no children and failing health depended entirely on a small government pension collected 16 km away — until the lockdown cut them off from it completely.
